About CIPA
The Council on International and Public Affairs was founded in 1954 as a non-profit research, education, and publishing group.
CIPA seeks to further the study and public understanding of problems and affairs of the peoples of the United States and other nations of the world through conferences, research, seminars and workshops, publications, and other means.
Major activities at present include three publishing programs:
- The Apex Press, which publishes books providing critical analyses of and new approaches to significant economic, social and political issues in the U.S. and throughout the world.
- Policy Studies Associates (PSA), which publishes materials for college and pre-college students that develop policy studies and citizenship skills.
- Center for International Training and Education (CITE), which seeks to further the understanding of other societies and cultures through its "Eyes" books — Through African Eyes, Through Chinese Eyes, Through Indian Eyes, Through Japanese Eyes, and Through Middle Eastern Eyes.
- TOES Books are an initiative of TOES/USA (see below). These books seek to further dialogue on and increase understanding of those issues on the TOES agenda: economic ideas and practices on which a more just and sustainable society can be built — "an economics as if people mattered."
- Too Much Newsletter
Other major interests of the Council include the following:
- Bhopal Action Resource Center, which supports the struggle of the victims of the world's worst industrial disaster for justice. CIPA developed and maintains a website to provide information for the U.S. about the work of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, especially its media outreach, at www.icjb.org.
- Program on Corporations, Law & Democracy, which strives to strengthen democratic control over corporations.
- TOES/USA (The Other Economic Summit) is part of an international non-governmental collaboration whose major activity is a yearly forum/exposition held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the G-8 (the world's leading industrial countries - the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Japan). TOES/USA also publishes books, occasional newsletters, and maintains contact with TOES-related colleagues in other countries.
Other affiliations of the Council include:
- National Jobs for All Coalition
- Institute for Energy and Environment Research
- Permanent Peoples Tribunal
- Global Information Network
